Vande Bharat Freight Trains: Speed, Cost & Benefits

Vande Bharat Freight Trains: Speed, Cost & Benefits

Indian Railways rolled out the high-speed Vande Bharat trains in 2019. Now Railways is planning to use the same platform for high speed freight trains.

Prototype and Train Specifications

The prototype models are being built at Chennai's Integral Coach factory. 25 such trains will be launched initially, with each train having 16-cars. The existing normal freight trains usually have 45 wagons.

Speed and Transit Time: How Fast are High-Speed Freight Trains?

These trains will run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, more than double the speed of the existing goods trains that run at 75 kmph.

Cost of High-Speed Freight Trains and Rail Market Share Goals

The estimated cost of each train is a‚ 60 Cr which is almost 3 times the cost of normal freight trains.

However, the high speed and quick transit time will compensate the cost as Indian Railways aims at increasing the freight market share from the existing 28% to 40% by 2030.

Focus on E-Commerce Parcels and Perishable Cargo

Most of these trains are planned to be deployed on the busiest routes of Indian Railways. The core focus will be to carry parcels of the e-commerce companies, currently moved mainly by roads. These trains will have 2 refrigerated cars out of the 16-cars, to carry perishable goods.

These trains will have a transit time 2.5 times faster than that of transportation by roads. In some sectors, these train will have shorter transit times than air cargo carriers.

What Will High-Speed Freight Trains be Called?

Though the name is not finalized, these high speed freight trains may be named Freight Metros.

Let's await a prospective future for multi-modal logistics in India!
