Cyclone Asani: Path, Speed, and Weather Impact

Severe cyclonic storm Asani lies over west central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. Asani is reported to be moving at a speed of 100-110 kmph. It is likely to move north-westwards by the night of 10 May and reach the North coast of Andhra Pradesh and towards Odisha. It is expected to re-curve towards north-eastwards towards North-west Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Asani is expected to weaken into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 Hrs.


Heavy rainfall is expected in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha disrupting the routines. It has already brought rainfall at several places in Tamil Nadu. Any kind of landfall is predicted to be unlikely.


Fishing operations across Bay of Bengal is suspended for May 10 and 11.


How will it affect the trade and logistics?

Visakhapatnam port has suspended operations from 10 May as the cyclonic storm is expected to reach the port city by 11 May. As a result delays in can be expected in berthing, loading and unloading of cargo ships. Vizag port is one of the 13 major ports of India, handling third largest cargo volumes.

Cargo backlog can be expected to be created at the Eastern ports of India. Danger signal 1 has been hoisted for four ports in Odisha. The impact of delay in operations can also be seen at Chennai and Kolkata ports due to the cyclone. 

23 domestic flights have been cancelled from Visakhapatnam international airport.

Delays are expected to the movement of cargo and parcels around south-eastern regions.
